School on Gravity 2026 · Day 2 · From Motion to Commotion

Hunting for Black Holes & Neutron Stars

Two decks: the tell-tale phenomena that reveal compact objects, and the observatories we hunt them with. Your task: figure out which instruments can catch your phenomena — and how.

In class: each group gets two object cards (e.g. “A1 & D3”). You have ~20 minutes: What is the signal? Which observatories could detect it, and what would they measure? Click an observatory card to see its specs. Then teach it to the rest of us. Finished early? Grab an extra card.

Mission-time bars tick marks today, hatched = planned/under construction. Spectral bars are log-frequency (EM), log-GW-frequency, or log-neutrino-energy.
